They are fun but don't get one that is a kit (mine is a bumblebee 450) that requires you to program how the servos keep it level. Way too much work and frustration.
Better to buy one that is ARF (almost ready to fly). All you have to do is install a battery and go. They start at about $90 and go up to $5000 so do some research first.Comment

Up to 500$ seems not too bad but I would want it RTF - The research is interesting but gets real confusing to an outsider![SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]Comment

There are a number of ones around $100 RTF but they are more like toys.
The Bumblebee ST550 is a real good quad copter. You can find one for about $300 to $500 but will need a transmitter and receiver. Those can be found for $100 so it is possible to stay under $500.
Another is the T580 Quadcopter for about $400 without the transmitter & receiver.
You can always go to RCGroups.com which is a forum for all types of RC gear. There are specific areas for Quadcopters that you can get some good feedback. Almost as good as what we get here for Solar equipment.Comment

This is a neat one but out of my toy price range.

These are the ones that a lot of civil liberties people are afraid of being used to invade their privacy. What they don't know or refuse to believe are the drones that fly at 50,000 ft that can read a license plate. Privacy is something most people no longer have but still think they have it.Comment

Even though that sounds like a good deal I would prefer it to be in production and have available spare parts. Unless he uses standard off the shelf parts for the motors, ESC and controller.Comment

Here is another neat one - unfortunately the price is 17,000$
The base model for the cheaper version - the X4 is 4,000$
Fun to look at though!
