    Need Solar Controller Recommendations for 12v Series Solar Setup

    Hello Solar Panel Talk,

    First and foremost, thanks for welcoming me to this forum! I am struggling to find the right solar controller for a simple 12V outdoor security system setup (I killed a cheap controller and another controller posed a fire risk). I thought I should ask the experts here

    Details:

    Batteries: x2 UPG UB121000 12V 100AH AGM SLA wired in series
    Solar Panel: x2 HQST 100 Watt 12V Monocrystalline Solar Panel wired in series
    Load: x2 Wyze Cam V2 (so no more than 3A)
    Solar Controller: TBD

    Preferences for the controller (but not requirements):
    • Small
    • PWM
    • USB port
    I appreciate any help and feedback

    two 12V batteries wired in series is 24V Not sure I can help much for your 12v setup, or that I understand your question.

      Like Mike said, your info just doesn't seem to work out correctly.

      Two 12v batteries in series does equal 24v. Did you mean two 12v wired parallel to each other, that would give you 12-volts and 200aH from your two batteries? Same thing goes for the solar panels...in series they make for a 24v system. Parallell them and they stay at 12 volts but the current/amps doubles.

      I looked up "Wyze Cam V2" and what I saw states the camera is for "indoor only" use, they're not intended for outdoor use....???

      If the controller will be outside it needs to be weatherproof. I bought a small "Huine 20a 12v/24v PWM" (look on Amazon) a few weeks ago for a small pv panel charging an electric fence battery The controller seems to be working well. It has no USB ports and no digital display. It is a small size and uses LEDs to inform the user of battery, charge, and load statuses.

      What you *could* do is purchase some USB ports and wire them to the "Load" circuit of this controller.

      What I would do (I'm no expert) is:

      1. - Wire the two batteries in parallel to keep the system at 12-volts and produce 200aH of capacity from the two batteries. This would provide roughly 100aH of usable power (50% discharge level).
      2. - Wire the two panels up in parallel to keep the system at 12-volts. Wiring them in parallel will add the current of both panels together, doubling the charging amps.
      3. - Wire USB ports to the "Load" output circuit. Two of those Wyze cameas should work fine on the load output circuit and if for some reason the battery gets discharged too much it will cut power to the circuit and help keep from damaging the batteries.

        If you're not using lithium batteries, use whatever you want, it doesn't really matter, PWM is PWM.

        Lithium requires MPPT. But MPPT is so cheap these days, PWM is rendered almost moot.

          I am building a system for my camping trailer and I am having a hard time finding out what charge controller to use. I want a 24v system as I will have a small fridge and will use 24v to 12 dc to dc when needed. I am going to use the panel pictured below and two of the batteries pictured below. I am trying to keep the cost down, any help on what charge controller to use and what specs I need would be a lot of help.
