You are correct in your thoughts. You want the current to have to go through and evenly use all the batteries in your bank. If connected only to your first battery it is the one that does all the work. That being said this applies to batteries in parallel. If you have a single string of batteries there should only be a positive terminal on one end of the string and a negative on the other end. Do you have more than one string of batteries?

The better way to wire up the batteries is with all equal size and length cables from each string to a bus bar. Your inverter and other loads will connect there too.

All strings need to connect to a common 'battery bus bar'.

Every connection needs to be the same length 'electrically'.

Be careful when making this connection, as it will want to arc. All three strings must be at exactly the same charge when you connect them, or else there will be a huge arc.
