decent AC surge protection devices?

I think it comes down to that this unit seems to come from the industrial world from a known brand. If the specs look good to you and its available, I would go for it. In most cases surge suppressors are just insurance from unusual events. Nothing will stop a direct lightning strike except an air gap but the grid is a pretty scary place these days and the move to distributed generation is not going to make it any less scary. As discussed in the other thread you probably will never know if a grid surge occurred so if someone gives you a call down the road for a piece of fried equipment you will not know, the only thing a SPD does is maybe reduce the numbers of those calls.

I had a friend lose half of his micro inverters because of a surge event. They were not covered by warranty. Ever since hearing that I have installed surge suppressors on my main panels. As noted earlier It is inexpensive insurance against unusual events. I just use the ones that plug into the bus bar of my main service panel.
